Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara 5x More Volume Review

March 19, 2011 by Bun Bun 3 Comments

In this part of the world where girls have shorter and finer eyelashes, we are forever looking for the ULTIMATE MASCARAthat thickens, lengthens, volumizes, moisturizes and whatevernonsense.

So will the Maybelline Falsies Mascara finally be The One?

With a name like “Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara Very Black”, there was much to envisage.

Volume = WOW.

Express = Gorgeous lashes instantly? I want!

Falsies = Make ‘em look like false eyelashes? Bring on the drama mama!

Waterproof = Check.

Very Black = Always looking out for the deepest, darkest black!

So once again, I voluntarily allowed myself to be engulfed in all that marketing hoomaballoo and got one for myself. It’s not available in Singapore though. Nothing ever is! ARGH! Did I tell you how Revlon Singapore carries only HALF of the shades Revlon US has for the Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation? Grrr…

ANYWAY! Here’s my review on the Maybelline Falsies mascara that has done good for many people and earned itself the Holy Grail status in their hearts.

5x more volume?

How much is 5 times really? When mascaras claim to give 5x, 10x, 99x more volume, I always wonder how they actually measure the number of times.

The formula was quite wet during the first couple of weeks and it merely did a good job of lengthening. Volume-wise, it did not give any more volume than the Anna Sui and Rimmel mascaras do.

However now that the formula has come in contact with air and has settled quite a bit, I must say that I’m extremely impressed with the Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara volumizing power! YESSS!!! I’m in luuuurrvveee with this mascara! The formula has dried up a bit and somehow made application a lot less slippery.

My eyelashes really look thicker and longer, just like false eyelashes! I’m so in love with it I have neglected my Anna Sui Volume Up mascara, which before the Maybelline Falsies mascara, was my FAVORITE volumizing mascara.

Spoon brush for easy application

I’m not a fan of spoon brushes, actually. Curved or spoon-shaped mascara brushes supposedly make mascara application a little easier because it follows the shape of the eye. However the shape of a mascara brush is not my priority when it comes to evaluating mascara. What I want out of a mascara is the EFFECT.

BIG FAT BRUSH

I swore off mascaras with big brushes many years ago as I don’t like how clumsy, awkward and clumpy they look. I find that because the brush is so fat, it blocks my view of the lashes. Moreover, it is too fat to use on the lower lashes and you have to switch to a mascara with a smaller brush to get to them.

See, it looks like Anna Sui’s big fat cousin!

However the fat brush is one of the reasons for giving such great volume. So I’m willing to live with it! Just gotta switch to the Rimmel Glam Eyes Waterproof Mascara for the lower lashes. A little troublesome, but worth it for such amazingly thick and dramatic eyelashes. I use the thinner side in an ‘n’ shape first and then flip to the ‘u’ shape.

No clumping

A month in, I haven’t experienced any serious clumping, just normal little fibres that sometimes hang on the ends of the lashes. I just use my fingers to remove them. I think mascaras nowadays don’t clump as much as they used to. Excellent!

False lash look

I had high expectations of this mascara due to all the raves about this mascara being the BEST volumizing mascara ever. I was looking forward to thick, false eyelashes-like effects, and it has lived up to its hype and surpassed my expectations! If you have puny lashes that need more oomph and aahhh, please get the Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara!!

Waterproof

In this part of the world where the sun mercilessly rains its rays upon the earth every single day, girls with oily skin like me are forever in search for a waterproof and smudgeproof mascara that will stay on for hours and weather the heat, rain, sweat and tears.

I experimented the Maybelline The Falsies mascara with eyelash primers like Smashbox Lash Primer and Shiseido The Makeup Mascara Base. By the late afternoons, it smudges a little, but that’s a problem I get with some mascaras that are not formulated to be smudgeproof. It smudged less with the Shiseido lash primer though. There’s a difference between waterproof and smudgeproof mascaras, ya know?

It’s really an awesome volumizing mascara and it may even replace my Anna Sui mascara’s status as my Holy Grail mascara any time soon. For a drugstore brand, this is definitely quite a steal for that amazing quality.
