Make Up Store Brush Cleaning Soap Review – So You Can Free Yourself Up To Do Other More Important Things

March 10, 2013 by Bun Bun 8 Comments

Make-Up-Store-Home-Spa-Brush-Cleaning-Soap-Review-Photos_cover

It’s not that I find deep cleaning my makeup brushes to rid them of built-up grime and bacteria unimportant – I cannot stress enough the importance of having clean brushes for a better application finish and prevention of dirty skin – but there’s just so much a busy-until-I-keep-snacking-because-I’m-so-freaking-stressed person can tolerate for standing at the sink scrubbing and rinsing and scrubbing and rinsing makeup brushes when I can be blogging or working on the business.

I don’t own as many brushes as a professional makeup artist, but have enough to make me sigh in resentment as I reluctantly lug my brushes to the sink, along with the Daiso Detergent, oil-based makeup remover, shampoo and conditioner. Troublesome, much?

The Daiso Detergent was what I was using previously to very effectively clean my brushes, so I was unconvinced I needed the Make Up Store Brush Cleaning Soap, especially when it came with a hefty price tag of SGD21.00.

I could buy TEN bottles of the Daiso Detergent and still have a dollar left to buy 3 packets of tissue paper. Lol.

Evonne’s elation to find this Brush Cleaning Soap back in store when we attended Make Up Store’s launch of a new collection sent little trembles to my little heart. She and the store manager were chatting away happily, about how this was in such huge demand.

OKIE!!! MUST BUY THEN! So finally, good money was traded in exchange for a bar of soap to appease my overwhelming curiosity.

Well, who said curiosity killed the cat?

I couldn’t be happier with this unassuming round-shaped soap. While it’s always easy to clean brushes used for powder products, brushes with denser bristles like my beloved Sigma F80, and/or those used for cream products require hardier treatment.

The Daiso Detergent did the job, but it took longer with all that swishing and washing with shampoo and conditioner after.

Experiment: Natural Hair Brushes

First up for experimentation – Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki Brush. << My review says it all; this is my ever-favorite foundation brush, really.

Finally, The Launch Of dolltodoll.com!

November 20, 2012 by Bun Bun 6 Comments

WOOHOOO!!! I am over the moon now as I sit here, sharing my labor of love with you.

Finally, finally, finally, after months of preparation, plenty of hardwork, sleepless nights, and indescribable stress levels, my online beauty boutique is up up up!

Even though I have brazenly inserted the name of the store in the title of this post, I’m gonna still shout with all the air in my lungs:

dolltodoll.com

IS LIVE!!!

(*waves hands madly in the air*)

Can you hear me? Can you hear me screeeeaaaammm, with all the love in my heart, that the idea of a store I mysteriously mentioned some months ago has solidified? My dream has finally seen the light of day, presented in the best way my fabulous team and I could manage, with as many brands and products we know you’ll love.

Wanna know how the name came about?

Well, at the start, we came up with some really ridiculous names like makeupdownleftrightcenter, wakeupyourmakeup, dollfromtheskyandsea, pana-doll, doll-mino, and even inapplicable ones such as fivesixseven. HAHAHA!!!

NOOO!!! I wanted a name that would evoke an image, tell a story, or have some meaning or association to makeup and beauty.

Then I thought…… *moment of enlightenment*

I’m a girl, I’m selling makeup to girls, the name should ride along this line.

And just like that, Doll To Doll came to mind. I ran it through friends and this was the name that garnered the highest votes! So it’s me (a doll [us, actually. but, anyways]) sharing beautiful and fun makeup with my girl friends (all you dolls)!

(Girl To Girl would seem like a shop selling kids clothing and wouldn’t sound half as cute. Heh heh!)

That was in June, and five months on, dolltodoll.com is live.

Today is 20 November 2012 – 20112012. NICE RIGHT!!! I initially wanted 211112 but my parents said 20112012 is a way more auspicious date for store opening after seeking the Chinese calendar. 20112012 looks very good too!

Just so you know, today is a good date for big events such as store openings, weddings, traveling, moving house, building house – basically anything big, new and exciting in your life!

SURREAL… CANNOT.BELIEVE.IT.

Doll To Doll would never have materialized without Bun Bun Makeup Tips, and what’s the blog without you, my cherished readers?

If not for your unwavering support and inspiring words of encouragement (on the blog and facebook) to chase my dream of setting up shop, I would never have had the relentless courage and strength to keep going.

In the next post that’s coming up in a short while, I will introduce the Top 10 products highly sought after by many readers and for which I always receive questions on where to buy, how to buy, how to ship from/to Singapore, etc.

Now I can proudly tell you: dolltodoll.com has it all! *pumps fist into air LOL

Please help us grow the facebook page by liking it! It is where we will post updates on special deals and host giveaways!! Ask your friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, family, followers to like too okie!! :D

What’s In My Travel Makeup Bag?

June 24, 2012 by Bun Bun 20 Comments

You know, the thing with travel makeup bags is that most of what’s inside are fixed costs, or rather, weight.

You need only a few pumps of foundation to last you a week, few swipes of blush, mere millimeters from eyeliner pencils, 0.5% of mascara, and extremely light dabs of lipstick that make almost no difference in height.

Foundation may be transferred into a little makeshift jar, if you insist, but that would quickly deteriorate the quality of the product, and who would take apart a blush or break into half a pencil? Mascara is impossible to modify for travel. Lol. It also makes no sense to transfer lipstick into a separate palette unless you’re bringing a lot of colors, in which case immediately translates into ‘bringing more than necessary’. We probably really only need 3 shades, unless you’re a MUA.

So for the most part, the amount of makeup we bring for a 4-day or 4-week trip is the same. Agree? I know you do! :D

Let’s look at what I brought for my 5D4N Okinawa Trip 2012.

1. Makeup bag: I got this from Diesel at KL Premium Outlet. It cost RM120, I think. It’s expensive, but the quality is really good! Waterproof, sturdy, yet light. And the little birdcages print is so cute! This pouch is actually detached from the hanging toiletry bag with 2 more compartments.

2. Urban Decay Naked Palette: Every girl’s must-have in their travel makeup bag, seriously! I brought Naked on my 7-day Taiwan trip too. Other palettes with neutrals will do, but I rely on Naked the most. The neutral shades I use most are Virgin, Naked, Buck, Darkhorse. I used Virgin and Sin a lot more before MUG Shimma Shimma came into the picture.

3. Z Palette with 23 eyeshadows: What?! Need so many for what?! I didn’t know there’re 23 eyeshadows in my Z Palette until I just counted. Lol. I usually have my most used or newest (to try out) eyeshadows in the Z Palette for easy access. I’m going to get the smaller, squared Z Palette so that I can force myself to bring half of these next time I travel. In here are eyeshadows from MAC, Makeup Geek, NYX, Sugarpill, L’Oreal, Kat Von D.

4. MAC Lustre Lipstick in See Sheer: I LOVE See Sheer! It’s a pretty, coral, that brightens up my skin instantly.

5. Revlon Colorburst in Blush: Hmmmm I find this so-so only. It tends to slide off easily.

6. MAC Studio Fix Foundation NC25: I didn’t use this but brought it along in case I don’t have time to stipple liquid foundation on in the morning. Luckily I managed time for my Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation every morning!

7. MAC Blot Powder Light: One of my daily essentials! Used to set makeup and control oil, in a way. I’ve panned out my MAC Blot Powder Pressed!

8. MAC Beauty Powder Too Chic: I have thrown away/put aside all other highlighters ever since I got MAC Beauty Powder in Too Chic. Looks exceptionally stunning yet natural on yellow-toned skin. It makes me look like I have cheekbones! :O

In a previous haul post I mentioned my order from Makeup Geek. I’d been reading good things about the Makeup Geek eyeshadows, especially from Jangsara, who is extremely talented. Inspirational looks, but not for the everyday.

Couldn’t resist ordering some goodies when they had a discount during Valentine’s Day week! :D

MAC 109 Small Contour Brush For Contouring Chubby Faces Like Mine

February 6, 2012 by Bun Bun 16 Comments

It took a long time, plenty of research and some nerve to buy another MAC brush. Mind you, they’re madly expensive! The MAC 109 Small Contour Brush retails for an insane SGD67. I bought it online, of course, but still.

Before I got the MAC 109 Small Contour Brush, I tried using the MAC 168 Angled Contour Brush to contour my cheekbones, temples and jawline, as what I always see Marlena of MakeupGeek do to create shadows on the face.

But because my face is much smaller and I have absolutely no cheekbones even when I pucker up and do the ‘fish face’, I always ended up with muddy, blotchy cheeks that extended almost to my jawline, when all I wanted to do was contour under my cheekbones. The 168 just made the powder blush/bronzer go all over the place.

I kept thinking ‘Wow, I must really suck’ to be always doing a bad contouring job, but later realized I was merely using the wrong tool!

Bun Bun’s Makeup Tip: Don’t fret if you’re getting it wrong. Sometimes, it’s quite alright to blame it on the tool. Heh.

So began my quest of finding the right tool for the right job. I Googled ‘MAC 109 dupe’, but while it’s usually rather easy to find lists of dupes for other brushes, it seemed the MAC 109 was IRREPLACEABLE and UNDUPABLE.

WOAH.

It bit into my bones to be throwing money on yet another MAC face brush, but when you are reminded of how lasting they are, the initial hefty price tag hence divided over a long time period, you feel much better.

It’s an investment worth making. In the long run, you will save money by purchasing a high quality brush.

Let’s get to the part where I tell you why the MAC 109 Small Contour Brush is part of my daily makeup routine.

Picks Up And Deposits The Right Amount Of Powder Product

Made of natural hair, the MAC 109 is dense yet soft, making the application and blending of products very easy. MAC suggests using the 109 for contour powder products and that’s what I use it for.

The 109 face brush picks up the right amount of contouring product with its dense bristles and deposits it on the face where you want it. It also buffs out products nicely so you don’t have ugly stripes down the cheeks.

The thing I really like about the 109 is its precision, something I could never achieve with the 168 Large Angled Contour Brush (or any other brush in my makeup brush stash) even though it is highly recommended by many beauty gurus for contouring.

Bun Bun’s Makeup Tip: No two faces are created equal, so just because someone said a face brush is The Face Brush doesn’t mean you have to force yourself to use it.

(Just in case you’re wondering what that silly thing on my hair is, check out this post on the Hair Velcro Pad)
