Tutorial: Does Using Heat To Revive Your Dried Up Gel Eyeliner Really Work?

December 12, 2012 by Bun Bun 26 Comments

We’ve heard it all.

Tricks of the Makeup Trade on how to make your gel eyeliner last longer:

  • Store your pot upside down
  • Keep it away from harsh lights
  • Cap it tightly after every use, no,  cap it after each dip. Meaning open – dip – close – apply – open – dip – close – apply – repeat
  • Use a clean brush
  • Don’t add water with the intention to moisten it

Do all of the above, and still have your gel liner dry up right before your very eyes, even before you hit half of the pot. And we’re talking about a gel liner pot that is used daily. You can probably slow down the aging process with these tricks, but not prevent totally gel liner from drying out.

You know it doesn’t behave quite the same as before anymore, not as buttery and soft, application takes more effort and you see dried flakes on the undereye area. At first you think they’re flakes from your mascara until one day you decided to go mascara-less and yet still end up with them ugly dark spots. Not even the kawaii kind of freckles. @_@”

I’ve gone through MAC Blacktrack, Kate gel liners, Maybelline gel liners, Coastal Scents gel giners, Inglot gel giners, Lioele gel liner and Bobbi Brown Black Ink. A good mix of high end, mid-range and drugstore brands there, and they all perished in the same way.

So no matter what class of branding your beloved gel liner belongs to nor does the universe care whether you perform the Tricks of the Trade with as much diligence as Monarch Butterflies migrating during fall, gel liners will eventually end up looking like dried mud.

Sad, I know, but true.

You can see how cakey and dry it appears when applied to the skin.

What’s In My Travel Makeup Bag?

June 24, 2012 by Bun Bun 20 Comments

You know, the thing with travel makeup bags is that most of what’s inside are fixed costs, or rather, weight.

You need only a few pumps of foundation to last you a week, few swipes of blush, mere millimeters from eyeliner pencils, 0.5% of mascara, and extremely light dabs of lipstick that make almost no difference in height.

Foundation may be transferred into a little makeshift jar, if you insist, but that would quickly deteriorate the quality of the product, and who would take apart a blush or break into half a pencil? Mascara is impossible to modify for travel. Lol. It also makes no sense to transfer lipstick into a separate palette unless you’re bringing a lot of colors, in which case immediately translates into ‘bringing more than necessary’. We probably really only need 3 shades, unless you’re a MUA.

So for the most part, the amount of makeup we bring for a 4-day or 4-week trip is the same. Agree? I know you do! :D

Let’s look at what I brought for my 5D4N Okinawa Trip 2012.

1. Makeup bag: I got this from Diesel at KL Premium Outlet. It cost RM120, I think. It’s expensive, but the quality is really good! Waterproof, sturdy, yet light. And the little birdcages print is so cute! This pouch is actually detached from the hanging toiletry bag with 2 more compartments.

2. Urban Decay Naked Palette: Every girl’s must-have in their travel makeup bag, seriously! I brought Naked on my 7-day Taiwan trip too. Other palettes with neutrals will do, but I rely on Naked the most. The neutral shades I use most are Virgin, Naked, Buck, Darkhorse. I used Virgin and Sin a lot more before MUG Shimma Shimma came into the picture.

3. Z Palette with 23 eyeshadows: What?! Need so many for what?! I didn’t know there’re 23 eyeshadows in my Z Palette until I just counted. Lol. I usually have my most used or newest (to try out) eyeshadows in the Z Palette for easy access. I’m going to get the smaller, squared Z Palette so that I can force myself to bring half of these next time I travel. In here are eyeshadows from MAC, Makeup Geek, NYX, Sugarpill, L’Oreal, Kat Von D.

4. MAC Lustre Lipstick in See Sheer: I LOVE See Sheer! It’s a pretty, coral, that brightens up my skin instantly.

5. Revlon Colorburst in Blush: Hmmmm I find this so-so only. It tends to slide off easily.

6. MAC Studio Fix Foundation NC25: I didn’t use this but brought it along in case I don’t have time to stipple liquid foundation on in the morning. Luckily I managed time for my Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation every morning!

7. MAC Blot Powder Light: One of my daily essentials! Used to set makeup and control oil, in a way. I’ve panned out my MAC Blot Powder Pressed!

8. MAC Beauty Powder Too Chic: I have thrown away/put aside all other highlighters ever since I got MAC Beauty Powder in Too Chic. Looks exceptionally stunning yet natural on yellow-toned skin. It makes me look like I have cheekbones! :O

Makeup Tutorial: MAC Goldmine, MUG Peacock, Shimma Shimma, Urban Decay Smog

May 2, 2012 by Bun Bun 16 Comments

The best way to test your makeup skills and speed is to go on holiday. Haha! I am a girly-girl and like to travel in style. Holiday types that require one to rough it out, wear safari-colored clothes, and live in travelers dormitories will never see me a part of them.

I need to have my security blankets -  a clean and safe hotel room, clothes I don’t get to wear in Singapore because of the weather and street style, and my makeup. I have to work faster on the makeup when on holiday though!

If I could, I would show you all 5 days of my makeup looks in Okinawa, but as I had idiotically deleted 80% of my Okinawa photos, I can only show you 1. But better than none!

EYES

Eyeshadow Primer – UDPP Eden

Eyelid – MAC Goldmine

Contour Area – MUG Peacock

Outer V – More MUG Peacock!

8 Days of Christmas Eye Makeup Tutorials: Day 7

December 30, 2011 by Bun Bun 12 Comments

I cannot believe I have managed to keep up with the 8 Days of Christmas Eye Makeup Tutorials series. I’d feared I’d drop out by Day 4, but LOOK! It’s Day 7 already! *Applause and whistles*

Today’s look was exactly what I wore on Christmas day. I went for a movie with my siblings and cousins and then we all went to grandma’s house in the late evening to join the rest of the family.

Up till I was in Primary 6, Christmas gatherings used to involve a big, beautifully decorated Christmas tree at one of my uncle’s house, under which presents wrapped in the most colorful wrapping papers laid. Back then, it was only me, my younger sister, and a few cousins, making the third generation a mere total of 5 or 6.

We would sneak (in full view of the adults, actually. lol.) up to the tree and look for our names that would be found on the presents, giggle to ourselves, pretend we didn’t see anything, and put the presents back.
