My Acne Clearing Combo: Garnier Deep Pore Unclogging Wash, Daily Energising Gel Scrub, And Aqua Defense Moisturiser For Sensitive Skin

April 21, 2013 by Bun Bun 8 Comments

Garnier-Pure-Active-Salicylic-Acid-Fruit-Energy-Review-2

Reviews on skincare products are rarely on my blogging agenda simply because it’s really hard to tell whether a product really works on my acne-prone and blemished skin. I’ve always been battling with acne – it comes and goes, and then returns with a vengeance. Rarrr!!!

When people bellow in agony “Oooooh, I’ve got a breakout!!!” and I see just a microscopic pimple or two on their otherwise flawless face, I roll my eyes and scream into my pillow. @_@

If I weren’t a beauty blogger, I would never have gotten acquainted with Garnier skincare. Living with brothers using Garnier Men, I couldn’t get past the association of Garnier with skincare FOR MEN. Product placement at its best, really.

My first and previous encounter with the brand was the Garnier BB Eye Roll On Concealer purchased out of curiosity. It was not until Garnier Singapore invited me for an event organized for the launch of their new range of skincare products – the Garnier Pure Active Fruit Energy Daily Energising Gel Wash and Gel Scrub – that we got re-acquainted and oh my, what a life-turning experience it has been!

Garnier-Fruit-Energy-Daily-Energising-Gel-Wash-Gel-Scrub-Launch-Event

Awwww…!! I miss my long hair! The event was actually 5 months ago, in December 2012. Ah yes, I took special effort to ensure that I really like the products I’m gonna talk about, hence the huge delay. Don’t fancy first impressions on products that much, especially skincare.

Garnier Pure Active Deep Pore Unclogging Wash

Garnier-Pure-Active-Deep-Pore-Unclogging-Wash-Review

First of all, I’m sorry but I really wouldn’t pick up a product that lacks in the packaging department unless I already know that it works wonders. I cannot put a finger as to what’s wrong with the packaging, maybe the radar image and rather clinical-looking design, but I would not find myself purchasing it because it just doesn’t catch my eye.

The fact that we are visually stimulated is undeniable and inescapable. We are instinctively attracted to beautiful things, moved by them. (Totally defending. LOL!)

So if not for the Garnier party, I would have missed out on the opportunity to find a cleanser that finally works for my skin! This range wasn’t even the subject of the party; I got it as a Christmas ‘gift exchange’ which Garnier already prepared for us. Haha!

Why The Garnier PureActive Deep Pore Unclogging Wash Works

I believe what brought great changes to my skin is the infusion of Salicylic Acid + HerbaSoothe concentrated formula in the Deep Pore Unclogging Wash, which claims to let you see ‘results from Day 1’. I’m quite happy to say that it is to a certain extent quite true.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows Review: As Eyeshadow Base, Eyeshadow, Eyeliner! (PLUS Plenty Of Eye Makeup Tips!)

April 8, 2013 by Bun Bun 11 Comments

Maybelline-Color-Tattoo-24Hr-Eyeshadow-Review-Swatches_3

Why it took me ages to finally try to the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows is beyond me. How could they be so awesome, yet stayed in my Doll To Doll Cosmetics inventory without me feeling the exploding urge to try them out despite ALL THE RAVING on the internet about them?

Seriously, when these babies came into the market, everyone from beauty professionals to girls with the slightest interest in makeup were talking about how these cream eyeshadows work like magic. Like they stayed on for hours, were creamy, blended gorgeously, extremely pigmented…….

Let me tell you. ALL THOSE ARE TRUE.

Staying true to my nature of being attracted to bright colors, I chose 4 of the brightest out of the 10 shades avaible – Tenacious Teal, Pomegranate Punk, Fierce & Tangy, and Edgy Emerald. And I love them all.

It’s like I have 4 kids and my love isn’t divided into quarters, rather, my ability to love is multipled four folds. HAHAHA! This analogy is weird. But you get what I mean, yea? :D

Plenty Of Product In A Hard Glass Container

I love that you can quickly see the shade without having to open each of the pots, much like how my Z Palettes allow me to see at one glance all the eyeshadows I’ve depotted into them. On the cap though, it’s quite a challenge to find among all the white words against the black background the shade name (see first picture).

There is so much product in each pot I could use it for three lifetimes. 4g of product is too much, in my opinion.

My Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner contains 3g, Inglot Eyeliner Gel 5.5g, Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner 3g, Kate Gel Eyeliner 2.5g, and I have never hit near bottom for any of these.

The glass container (acrylic, maybe?) makes the whole thing heavy and I probably wouldn’t bring it for travel, and also because I can’t depot it without worrying that it might dry out faster than if it were left in its original glass environment.

Creamy, Blendable, Pigmented

What they say is true. It’s hard not to fall in love with these Maybelline Color Tattoos for their texture and pigmentation. Getting to the level of intensity you desire is a piece of cake too. Sometimes I’ll go with just one layer for a simple touch of color, sometimes I’ll build up to four, five layers to get a really concentrated coat.

Here are pictures, swatches and descriptions:

Inglot Black Gel Liner 77: Me No Likey At All

March 25, 2013 by Bun Bun 3 Comments

Inglot-Gel-Liner-77-Black-Gel-Liner-Review-Swatches-Comparison

Did I get a crazy, alien version of the Inglot 77 Gel Liner?

Why is it that everywhere I go (online, obviously), I see praises and compliments thrown at this gel liner? With every positive review I see of this product, my face contorts into indistinguishable shapes of rebellion.

In my review on the colored Inglot Gel Liners, I mentioned how appalled I was to discover the huge disparity in consistency, smudgeproof finish and staying power between the black one and the rest of my colored ones.

Here are some positive pointers I gathered from other users of the Inglot 77 Gel Liner: (edited for language and length)

  • Has great pigmentation and perfect opaque black
  • Totally smudgeproof
  • Creates the most intense dark black matte line
  • Stays all day
  • “I use this to line my upper lid, tightline, and it even works/stays in my waterline. It is so soft and creamy – I only need to use the lightest touch of it in the pot to have enough on my eyeliner brush – too much and I expect it may smudge as some others seem to have experienced”
  • Extremely pigmented and velvety & applies like a dream. Stays looking brand new for my 12 hour day.
  • Sooo creamy
  • The blackest black
  • Beats MAC blacktrack fluidline without a question & its cheaper, doesn’t dry out or crack
  • “Has amazing lasting power on both upper lash line and waterline! The Inglot salesperson told me it may not be suitable for the waterline of contact lens wearers but its perfectly fine with me and my contacts”
  • The case is unbreakable (plasticky)

The ONLY statement I can agree with from the above is that of its plasticky case, which I also mentioned in the previous Inglot Gel Liners review, which makes it quite safe for travel.

As for the other statements – pfft! – like, wheerrrttttt???

Pigmented? Intense Black?!?

The Inglot 77 should supposedly be pigmented and the blackest of black, but because mine applies like dried paint, tugs at my poor lids and causes anxiety as to how much fine lines I’ve added with each stroke, I fail to understand what others mean when they described it as pigmented and intensely dark. Before I can even see any pigmentation, the crusty finish overwrites everything.

Inglot-Gel-Liner-77-Black-Gel-Liner-Review-Swatches-Comparison_3

Just look at how dry it looks! I don’t encourage judging by appearance because many products have proven quite the opposite of the way they first looked. But this, this is Mr Crusty.

Make Up Store Brush Cleaning Soap Review – So You Can Free Yourself Up To Do Other More Important Things

March 10, 2013 by Bun Bun 8 Comments

Make-Up-Store-Home-Spa-Brush-Cleaning-Soap-Review-Photos_cover

It’s not that I find deep cleaning my makeup brushes to rid them of built-up grime and bacteria unimportant – I cannot stress enough the importance of having clean brushes for a better application finish and prevention of dirty skin – but there’s just so much a busy-until-I-keep-snacking-because-I’m-so-freaking-stressed person can tolerate for standing at the sink scrubbing and rinsing and scrubbing and rinsing makeup brushes when I can be blogging or working on the business.

I don’t own as many brushes as a professional makeup artist, but have enough to make me sigh in resentment as I reluctantly lug my brushes to the sink, along with the Daiso Detergent, oil-based makeup remover, shampoo and conditioner. Troublesome, much?

The Daiso Detergent was what I was using previously to very effectively clean my brushes, so I was unconvinced I needed the Make Up Store Brush Cleaning Soap, especially when it came with a hefty price tag of SGD21.00.

I could buy TEN bottles of the Daiso Detergent and still have a dollar left to buy 3 packets of tissue paper. Lol.

Evonne’s elation to find this Brush Cleaning Soap back in store when we attended Make Up Store’s launch of a new collection sent little trembles to my little heart. She and the store manager were chatting away happily, about how this was in such huge demand.

OKIE!!! MUST BUY THEN! So finally, good money was traded in exchange for a bar of soap to appease my overwhelming curiosity.

Make-Up-Store-Home-Spa-Brush-Cleaning-Soap-Review-Photos_1

Well, who said curiosity killed the cat?

I couldn’t be happier with this unassuming round-shaped soap. While it’s always easy to clean brushes used for powder products, brushes with denser bristles like my beloved Sigma F80, and/or those used for cream products require hardier treatment.

The Daiso Detergent did the job, but it took longer with all that swishing and washing with shampoo and conditioner after.

Experiment: Natural Hair Brushes

First up for experimentation – Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki Brush. << My review says it all; this is my ever-favorite foundation brush, really.

Greater Control For Sensitive Skin: Curel Moisure Face Milk And Curel Intensive Moisture Cream

March 4, 2013 by Bun Bun 4 Comments

 AdvertorialCure-For-Dry-And-Sensitive-Skin---Curel-Moisure-Face-Milk,-Curel-Intensive-Moisture-Cream_cover-3

Growing up with a constant reminder that the wrong use of products will lead to terrifying consequences such as waking up one morning with a full face of pimples as experienced by my mum’s colleague, I’ve always been wary of what I put on my face.

Add to that the fact that certain ingredients in facial products can trigger a cycle of inflammation that is hard to stop on my skin, I feel like I’ll be engaging in a life-long struggle with skin sensitivity issues.

There are many types of skin sensitivity with different levels of severity, but I believe there are mainly two broad categories – (1) skin that is naturally sensitive to anything at all, and (2) skin that is aggravated by certain ingredients in skincare formula.

I believe my skin belongs in the second category because the first category sees skin that is REALLY, INNATELY sensitive with reactions such as pustules, skin bumps, or skin erosion, skin irritations, redness, itching or rashes and has a tendency toward blushing and skin flushing.

These are pictures of skin irritation with extremely sensitive skin.

Sensitive-skin-irritation-rashes-2

Sensitive-skin-irritation-rashes

SO OUCH. :(

While my occasional breakout from products and bad sleeping habits suddenly seems mild compared to innately sensitively skin, I still do want to balance the level of sensitivity of my skin.

If you, like me, have sensitive skin and find that the quest for the ideal moisturizer is a tough task, remember that no matter what you MUST moisturize! Don’t give up searching because moisturizing products for sensitive skin help skin hold on to moisture so it resists drying and abrasion.

What Causes Sensitive Skin?

While factors like skin disorders, allergies, injured skin and genetics like age and gender differences contribute to skin sensitivity, it is largely due to the loss of Cermamide in the skin that causes more sensitive skin. Increasing stress and environmental allergies also make skin more prone to problems, so…

MUST MOISTURIZE!!
