Bun Bun’s First Birthday + Giveaway!

March 3, 2012 by Bun Bun 45 Comments

When the clock strikes midnight, I’d love to tickle her tummy, rub her behind the ears, put her chubby cheeks in my mouth and whisper in her ear “Happy birthday my dearest, you made it to a year.”

Well, if only Bun Bun were real, that is.

However, I don’t think I’d like to wish that she were real – like in flesh and blood – I would totally freak out. @_@”

About one year ago, http://bunbunmakeuptips.com went live. I say ‘about’ because I can’t remember when exactly. The first post was published on 21 February 2011 and I didn’t have Bun Bun as my blog mascot until much later (the Bun Bun image at the bottom of that first post was included later).

So Bun Bun’s birthday is really… arbitrary. Hoho. I thought 3rd March would be a nice date since it’s easy for me to remember and also because my birthday is on 3rd July. Three is a lucky number. When we take pictures we always say ‘1, 2, 3!’, and we have Three Little Pigs, and Three Blind Mice, and Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Three Musketeers…….

The house style and editorial voice of my Bun Bun blog was set somewhere in late September 2011, after the launch of the current blog design. It took me a while to find my voice and identity, and stand out from the very crowded (but awesome) beauty and makeup community.

At the start, I wasn’t worried so much that I would run out of topics to blog about, but more that nobody would read what I write. Haha. Come on, let’s be honest, we all put our face (and sometimes our soul) out there because we want to share and have people communicating with us based on what we write. Nobody wants to write for nobody forever. For a few of months, I was super lonely but I kept going.

When my friends asked ‘How do you always find something to write?”, I realized that I never stopped having ideas. You should check out my backlog of product reviews, man. I’m buying faster than I’m reviewing.

Hundreds of posts later (that averages to about 3 posts per week – fair enough), I still love what I’m doing and am thankful for what the beauty community has given – the making of new friends, online and in person, and knowing that other bloggers also say ‘blogging can be lonely’ somewhat makes me feel less lonely.

Thank you so much, each of you.

So come, come, celebrate with me. To all my readers, those who’ve been with me from the start to those newly acquired, here’s Bun Bun’s first birthday giveaway!

There will be TWO GIVEAWAYS; the second one very much dependent on the first giveaway’s response. If there are at least 200 entries in this giveaway then the second giveaway will be ‘unlocked’. Lol. Some of my super duper favorite things are in this giveaway, some in the second (hint: L’OREAL COLOR INFALLIBLE EYESHADOW EMERALD LAME (You need Emerald Lame, girl! :D ).

I Found A Perfect Foundation Shade Match In Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation!

January 16, 2012 by Bun Bun 25 Comments

HANDS UP! Who could not help but find themselves running out to get a bottle of the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation after watching Lisa Eldridge’s video on how to create a flawless foundation finish?

When I first watched that video, I was like ‘WOW! This must be the best foundation in the world!’, then on second thoughts, ‘Meh, must be one of those sponsored products… that’s why she’s saying all these nice stuff’. But as the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation got utilized in many of her other videos, coupled with some research done on my own, it seemed the consensus that it’s a must-have drugstore foundation!

I wanted to wait for a sale, as I felt I had more than enough foundation to see me through for a long time, and so… buying another foundation at a sale would help to reduce the guilt of owning one too many. No? *grins*

The 30% off Singapore Tampines BHG sale came at the right time and the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation was one of the two Bourjois foundations I purchased. I reviewed the Bourjois Flower Perfection Foundation earlier.

Great Match For Skin With Yellow Undertone

Even though the ‘auntie’ (it’s how we address any older woman in Singapore) was just a promoter at the Bourjois counter, and not a qualified MUA, I was glad she recommended the right foundation shade for me. Some promoters are rather hopeless, they’ll just pour a big glob of foundation on your hand, spread it the length of your arm and say “This also can, that also can. Up to you”. Grrrr.

While the Bourjois Flower Perfection Foundation 52 goes on slightly pink on my skin, the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation in 52 is a perfect match for my MAC NC20-25 skin tone.

I’m surprised a European makeup brand, and despite complaints that the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation has limited range of shades, can produce a foundation shade that is so suitable for Asian skin, which typically has yellow undertones.

You can see the Healthy Mix Foundation is more yellow and it fits me to a T!

Oh, recently a friend commented that I look like Little Miss Sunshine:

Must be all that yellow in my skin and hair. LOL! But he also did mention it’s coz I always appear cheerful and smiling. :D

Make Me Youthful Again, Bourjois Youth Extension Flower Perfection Foundation SPF 15!

December 18, 2011 by Bun Bun 17 Comments

I love it when a product not only does what it promises, but springs on you a surprise element!

Did you know the Bourjois Youth Extension Flower Perfection Foundation SPF 15 would smell so good? Well, I didn’t!

My initial experience with Bourjois was its blushes. I don’t know why Bourjois blushes are so heavily perfumed. I choke just going near them. I had 4 of those some years ago. The pigmentation’s not too bad if you don’t get the glittery ones and the colors are pretty, but why the super heavy smell? I’m not even going to call it ‘fragance’ coz it’s too much to take. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy any of those blushes anymore.

The rest of its products like mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, are free from intoxicating smells though, but I made sure to take good sniff of the Bourjois Flower Perfection Youth Extension Foundation before purchasing it.

The Bourjois Flower Perfection Youth Extension Foundation is part of a small collection which consists of this foundation, a face primer, a translucent loose powder and a face brush.

Eyeshadow Tutorial for Asian Eyes Part 3 – Defining the Outer V

November 8, 2011 by Bun Bun 32 Comments

Now that all that Halloween dust has settled, it’s time to return to the Eyeshadow Tutorial for Asian Eyes series!

In the third installment of the Eyeshadow Tutorial for Asian Eyes series, we discuss the Outer V.

Oooh, the MYSTERIOUS Outer-V. That tiny area that has eluded even the best of us.

Before we continue, why not check out the other parts of this series first?

Part 1: Where to Apply Eyeshadow

Part 2: Vertical Gradient Method

Where is the Outer V?

As with the Crease and Contour Area, the Outer-V on the Asian eye is quite different from that on the Caucasian eye. It took me a while to discover this as well.

On the (typical) Caucasian eye,

1st stroke of ‘V’: Imagine a line that extends beyond the Lower Lash Line, draw the line towards the brow, careful not to extend beyond the Border.

2nd stroke of ‘V’: Connect with the Crease.

Marlena from MakeupGeek has a great video on the Outer V for Caucasian eyes. I look like a drag queen when I use that method. Lol.

On the (typical) Asian eye,

1st stroke of ‘V’: Imagine a line that extends beyond the Lower Lash Line, draw the line towards the brow, careful not to extend beyond the Border.

2nd stroke of ‘V’: Blend towards the Contour Area (aka Orbital Rim or Socket Line), which is above the Fold.

For other parts of the eye, check out Part 1 of the Eyeshadow Tutorial for Asian Eyes series.

Simple Eye Makeup Tutorial Using MAC Gorgeous Gold and Stage Poison on the Eyelid

October 22, 2011 by Bun Bun 9 Comments

It’s the weekend! Yippeee!!

Some day this week I put together a look that required just 2 colors on the eyelid. I usually use at least 3 colors on the eye – on the Contour Area to diffuse a strong color, on the Outer V to create an accent, or just multiple colors on the lid itself.

But on that fateful day I just thought of using these 2 colors – MAC Gorgeous Gold (really gorgeous duo-toned eyeshadow that reflects gold and green) and Stage Poison (an electrifying shimmery blue that looks great applied subtly and built upon).
