What’s In My Travel Makeup Bag?

June 24, 2012 by Bun Bun 20 Comments

You know, the thing with travel makeup bags is that most of what’s inside are fixed costs, or rather, weight.

You need only a few pumps of foundation to last you a week, few swipes of blush, mere millimeters from eyeliner pencils, 0.5% of mascara, and extremely light dabs of lipstick that make almost no difference in height.

Foundation may be transferred into a little makeshift jar, if you insist, but that would quickly deteriorate the quality of the product, and who would take apart a blush or break into half a pencil? Mascara is impossible to modify for travel. Lol. It also makes no sense to transfer lipstick into a separate palette unless you’re bringing a lot of colors, in which case immediately translates into ‘bringing more than necessary’. We probably really only need 3 shades, unless you’re a MUA.

So for the most part, the amount of makeup we bring for a 4-day or 4-week trip is the same. Agree? I know you do! :D

Let’s look at what I brought for my 5D4N Okinawa Trip 2012.

1. Makeup bag: I got this from Diesel at KL Premium Outlet. It cost RM120, I think. It’s expensive, but the quality is really good! Waterproof, sturdy, yet light. And the little birdcages print is so cute! This pouch is actually detached from the hanging toiletry bag with 2 more compartments.

2. Urban Decay Naked Palette: Every girl’s must-have in their travel makeup bag, seriously! I brought Naked on my 7-day Taiwan trip too. Other palettes with neutrals will do, but I rely on Naked the most. The neutral shades I use most are Virgin, Naked, Buck, Darkhorse. I used Virgin and Sin a lot more before MUG Shimma Shimma came into the picture.

3. Z Palette with 23 eyeshadows: What?! Need so many for what?! I didn’t know there’re 23 eyeshadows in my Z Palette until I just counted. Lol. I usually have my most used or newest (to try out) eyeshadows in the Z Palette for easy access. I’m going to get the smaller, squared Z Palette so that I can force myself to bring half of these next time I travel. In here are eyeshadows from MAC, Makeup Geek, NYX, Sugarpill, L’Oreal, Kat Von D.

4. MAC Lustre Lipstick in See Sheer: I LOVE See Sheer! It’s a pretty, coral, that brightens up my skin instantly.

5. Revlon Colorburst in Blush: Hmmmm I find this so-so only. It tends to slide off easily.

6. MAC Studio Fix Foundation NC25: I didn’t use this but brought it along in case I don’t have time to stipple liquid foundation on in the morning. Luckily I managed time for my Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation every morning!

7. MAC Blot Powder Light: One of my daily essentials! Used to set makeup and control oil, in a way. I’ve panned out my MAC Blot Powder Pressed!

8. MAC Beauty Powder Too Chic: I have thrown away/put aside all other highlighters ever since I got MAC Beauty Powder in Too Chic. Looks exceptionally stunning yet natural on yellow-toned skin. It makes me look like I have cheekbones! :O

Something I Use Every Single Time: MAC Blot Powder Pressed

March 27, 2012 by Bun Bun 11 Comments

What?!?!

Before I even had the time to write a fabulous review on the MAC Blot Powder Pressed, it has unknowingly panned out on me! I didn’t expect it… I only use it erm, every single time I apply makeup… Heh heh.

I tried my hardest to like loose powder; I’ve tried the range from expensive ones like NARS to drugstore ones like e.l.f. I could never deal with the hassle of being very careful not to get the powder all over the place when I open the cover, take product, close the cover, and the mess of every step of the way.

Loose powders are also not very travel-friendly. You should see how much trouble I went through to transfer the NARS Loose Powder just so that I don’t have to lug a huge container that threatens to spill its contents at each tilt.

For A Matte Finish

Oilies begone with the MAC Blot Powder Pressed? Hmmm, I guess if you have oily/combination skin, then it will keep oil at bay. But I have oily skin, and in the typical hot and humid Singapore weather, the oilies usually start to show probably after 5 hours. For shine to show only after 5 hours means a lot for my oily skin already! If I didn’t use the MAC Blot Powder to set liquid foundation, my face would look greasy in half the time.

Easy Eye Makeup Look: Some Glitter Eyeliner, Color On The Lower Lashline, False Eyelashes And You’re Done!

December 16, 2011 by Bun Bun 18 Comments

I haven’t done an eye makeup look so simple in a while.

Ever since I learnt how to use multiple colors, how to blend eyeshadows, how to attack and conquer the Contour Area (Learn to define your Contour Area instead of the Crease), accentuate the Outer V (How to define the Outer V?), and other makeup tips and tricks, I never spot a look without doing at least one of the above.

The other day I was doing a review and swatches of the Bourjois Liner Glitter Fizz Eyeliner before going out for dinner with friends. I was running late, so I simply threw on some false eyelashes, swept some green eyeshadow on the lower lash line, popped some falsies on and I was good to go!

Native American Inspired Look for Makeup Geek Weekly Challenge

November 11, 2011 by Bun Bun 12 Comments

MakeupGeek has had her Weekly Challenge going on for ages, but I’ve never participated. I used to look at the submissions and thought “Wow, are these people all makeup artists?? I could never do that.”

That was the time when my eye makeup was all but eyeliner and mascara. And I didn’t have bunbunmakeuptips.com to constantly push myself to explore new makeup products and looks.

I don’t know what sparked my interest this time. I don’t even know anything much about the culture and history of Native Americans. But I send in something this time, and had tremendous fun creating it!

So I went to google for pictures for inspiration. Found many, but they didn’t quite attract me.

Until I saw this:

I love the contrast of Obama’s formal black suit against the tribal war chief’s colorful head dress.

And so I did this!

Makeup Look Suitable for Dance Lessons or Maybe the Gym

September 19, 2011 by Bun Bun 7 Comments

Some people might think it is silly to get all dressed up for a workout session, be it on the dance floor or the gym. You are going to sweat it out anyway, right?

Yes, I am going to sweat it all out, but I want to look good doing it. Or at least, less horrifying. Haha!

While I prefer going all naked on the face when I go to the gym because gym workout is mostly a solo activity, I do make an effort to put on some makeup when I go for dance classes that require social interaction. (Oh, I just started taking up Salsa lessons and social dance sessions are great fun!)

Not because I want to bat my eyelashes at the opposite sex or impress people with my makeup skills and color coordination under the low lights, but because makeup gives me the confidence to get into the groove and dance better.

You want to make yourself feel good while exercising, so if hot pink shoelaces or a colorful bandana gives you that extra ounce of motivation, go for it! For me, some light eyeshadow color, eyeliner, and mascara works for me.

So here’s what I wore to a salsa dance class two weeks ago!

FACE

Face Primer – Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15

Foundation – Lancome Maqui Blanc MiracleLiquid Foundation SPF 26/PA++ (with Sigma F80 Flat Top Kabuki Brush)

Powder – MAC Studio Fix Foundation NC 25 (with EcoTools Blush Brush)

EYES

Eye Primer – Urban Decay Primer Potion Original

Lid – MAC Gorgeous Gold eyeshadow (with MAC 239)

Contour Area – MAC Peaches blush (with MAC 239 and MAC 217)
