Makeup Tutorial: Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow… And Some Shyness

September 7, 2012 by Bun Bun 20 Comments

I realize I’m really uninspiring when it comes to naming my makeup tutorials. Hahaha! I mean, how else can you call an eye makeup tutorial that involves the use of colors purple, blue, green and yellow? I could name it ‘colorful’, but so are most of my tutorials!

When everything is important, nothing is important anymore, right? So purple, blue, green and yellow it shall be.

I wore this look for the NDP Preview 2012, where I went backstage with Singapore bloggers and Instagrammers. Go read all the NDP-related posts! I’m so grateful to have been part of this mega annual event!

Part 3 - Singapore NDP 2012: Previews Are That Much Cooler

Part 2 – LovingSG In Many Different Ways!

Part 1 – I’m Involved In Singapore NDP 2012!

There’s nothing NDP-ish about my eye makeup look though – no red, no white, no crescent or stars – only that I really made up for the special occasion. Nothing OTT, my looks are always wearable. Oh maybe I could name this tutorial ‘fireworks’, but that’s kind of forcing it. Lol.

Let’s get started!

EYE MAKEUP

Eyeshadow Primer – UDPP Eden

Eyelid – (Divided into 4 sections, sorta) MAC Gorgeous Gold (innermost – first quarter); Sugarpill Midori (second quarter); MAC Freshwater (third quarter); Urban Decay Darkhorse (outermost – last quarter).

Inner Corner – Clio Gelpresso Waterproof Pencil Gel Liner Metalic Silver No. 6

Contour Area – Makeup Geek Cocoa Bear. I really love Cocoa Bear. The warm brown really blends nicely into my skintone. I think I could have used a little bit of NYX Rust too.

Outer V – Urban Decay Darkhorse, very subtly

Brow Bone Highlight – Makeup Geek Shimma Shimma

Lower Lash Line – Clio Gelpresso Waterproof Pencil Gel Liner Star Purple No. 5

Eyeliner – Clio Professional Waterproof Kill Black Brush Liner

Eyelash Primer – Dior Diorshow Maximizer

Mascara – L’Oreal Collagene Mascara

Eyebrow – Lioele Auto Eyebrow 01 Natural Brown for the brow tail; Shiseido Integrate Brow Pencil BR741 to outline the general shape; Shiseido Integrate Brow Palette to fill in

FACE MAKEUP

Primer – Monistat

Foundation – Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation

Concealer – theBalm Time Balm Concealer

Face Powder – MAC Blot Powder Light

Highlighter – MAC Beauty Powder Too Chic

Contour – NYC Bronzer Sunny

Cheeks – Milani Baked Blush Luminoso

LIP MAKEUP

Lip Balm – Dermalogica Lip Treatment

Lipstick – OCC Lip Tar Grandma; MAC Speed Dial

I LOVED my makeup for the day! <3 <3 <3

The false eyelashes are especially pretty. They look so natural, feel very comfortable and are really inexpensive. Tell you a secret, I’M GONNA SELL THEM IN MY STORE!!! Heh heh. I’ll let you know when the site’s up (very soon)!

Where to get some of my favorite products:

Sugarpill Midori (Sugarpill website)

Urban Decay Naked Palette (Amazon)

Clio Professional Waterproof Brush Liner Kill Black (Amazon)

Milani Baked Blush Luminoso (Amazon)

MAC Too Chic Beauty Powder (Amazon)

NYC Bronzer In Sunny (Drugstore)

Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel (Amazon)

I’m Too Shy To Give Out My Card

When I go out on the streets, strangers come up to me and tell me ‘I love your eye makeup’. Sometimes they stare and I know they’re not looking at me as a whole but at my eye makeup coz they’re not even looking into my eyes, but slightly above, at the canvas of colors. For those who talk to me, I would just smile and say ‘thanks!’ but inside my heart there are splashing rainbows and handmade confetti bursting into the abyss of my soul. HAHAHA!!!

Sometimes they would ask if I’m a makeup artist and I would say no. Sometimes they would stop and ask how do I ‘do it’. Maybe I should just invite them to visit bunbunmakeuptips.com. Should I? So embarrassing!! LOL!

I was very shy about putting my face up on the blog initially, as you would have read in this post, but now that I’ve grown accustomed to shamelessly putting my face forward, I’m shy about telling people about my blog. Self-promotion is too…. I don’t know! I’m SHY!!!! OMGwhatiswrongwithme.

My friends are all very proud of me and the blog and they do tell their friends about it. But when they tell a friend about my blog IN FRONT OF ME, I’ll go ‘AHHHH!!! Aiya!!! NO LA!! Shy! Shy!’.

It’s not that I’m not proud of my own blog -  I am super proud of it – but I guess it’s an Asian thing (Hahaha ya ya, blame it on the ‘Asian thing’), where we were taught since young and grew up in this culture that does not see promoting oneself blatantly as a virtue. Must be modest.

What are your views? Are you comfortable with telling friends about your blog, if you’re a blogger? Should I tell strangers about my blog when they ask about my makeup?

Yes, tell them. It's no different than sending them a link if you bump into them online. :)

@gothchiq That's very true. Thanks for putting it in perspective. =)

if they ask about your eye makeup, tell them to find it all at bunbunmakeuptips! im sure that the really interested ones will want to know how much effort you've made to get this stunning look!

@orqngefirefly OKIE!!! *pumps fist into air* I'm getting more and more fired up with each encouraging comment I receive!

How about you read my reply on @Kate T 's comment and tell me what you think. It's funny just thinking about it. LOL.

Kate T

Definitely tell them about your blog if they ask you "how you did it". I'm sure they would appreciate the tutorials you shared.

BunBunMakeupTips
BunBunMakeupTips moderator 5pts

 @Kate T Then I shall, by your encouragement, I SHALL!! ^_^*

I have a sudden thought though. Someone asks how do I do it, then I say 'Here, check out my beauty blog', then she says 'Oh, not interested'.

*thunder crash, lightning flash*

@BunBunMakeupTips  @Kate T If someone actually says that, then just say "um, okay," shrug and keep walking. If they miss out, too bad for them.

@BunBunMakeupTips  @Kate T  if I were you and that person says 'not interested', then i'll give her a dirty look! haha! well, show the card if anyone asks 'how did you do it?'. Then if she says 'not interested', you can just tell them that the tutorial for the eye makeup is on the website. If you're feeling chatty, maybe explain the makeup tutorial in two sentences and then show the card? :P Then again, Tashi5 is right. It's quite uncommon in Singapore for strangers to compliment on someone else's eye makeup.

I love your eyes, it's so beautifull and the colours match so good together :). I understand your shyness so well, it's like reading about myself, haha :). You shouldn't tho, I do think it's a thing that takes some time and courgae, but you'll get there!

BunBunMakeupTips
BunBunMakeupTips moderator 5pts

@BellaChique I'm glad you're shy too. HAHAHA that sounds really awkward. What I meant was at least I know I'm not being weird by myself and it's okie to be kinda shy yet want to share about something you love.

Thank you for your encouragement! I'll pluck up my courage to hand my card out if someone asks next time! =)

I don't think you need to be shy about having such a successful beauty blog, you ought to be proud of it. ;) I do understand how you feel though, only a few of my good friends know I have a beauty blog and for a very long time I was hesitant about putting my face on the blog too. I was worried about the comments I would get. There are nasty people and they are also tonnes of really nice and kind ones. And through all the kind comments I started putting my face on my blog, now there is no looking back. My DH shakes his head when he sees me taking pictures of myself. :)

As for your business card, I think you just to be a little thick skin and give your card. If you want your blog to be successful you need to let people know about it.

BunBunMakeupTips
BunBunMakeupTips moderator 5pts

@mjacqueline I'm so glad we're on the same page! So that's one more person who understands what I'm feeling. =)

My family likes to photobomb me when I'm taking pictures of myself. Sometimes I get a really good shot and then I see my brother's head peeking out from one of the corners. LOL. So annoying but funny at the same time.

I shall pluck up the courage (and some more layers of skin) to hand out my card the next time someone asks me about my makeup. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Tashi5

From the flip side, it would be very hard for me to approach a stranger to compliment her on her makeup because I would feel too shy and awkward.

I would be grateful to find out you had a website, because then I could look at the tutorials and not keep trying to discretely stare at your makeup to figure out how to do it!

BunBunMakeupTips
BunBunMakeupTips moderator 5pts

@Tashi5 Oh dear then how shall I do it? Maybe inconspicuously drop my name card along the way, like Hansel and Gretel? XD

Tashi5
Tashi5 5pts

@BunBunMakeupTips You can do it!  Hand out your business card and say, "If you're interested, I've got a website."   People who ask genuinely want to know more!

BAMBIx
BAMBIx 5pts

Actually whenever I read your tutorials I'm always kind of amazed how can you blend your eyeshadow so smoothly. It's so smoothh. This look is more amazing coz you divide your eyelids into 4 sections, and impressively blended out so smoothhhh. And your lip looks awesome! (Is that the word "awesome" should be used with lip LOL I dunno ...)

Whooppps, Asian Things ... I understand :) If I were you, I would feel shy too HAHA for no reason.

BunBunMakeupTips
BunBunMakeupTips moderator 5pts

@BAMBIx Oooh thank you BAMBIx! It's really not too hard if the eyeshadows are of reasonable quality, more important are the tools used! Good ones really make blending a breeze so you can concentrate on the color transition. =)

Ya! It's funny we get shy over things we ought to be otherwise. I believe in time to come I shall be less shy! HAHA!
