First of all, what’s with the ‘bent’?
Difference between a straight eyeliner brush and a bent eyeliner brush
The angled liner brush used here is the Ecotools Eyeliner Brush from the 5-piece set.
Straight:
In order to get the tip of a straight eyeliner brush close to your lash line, you have to hold it perpendicular to your face.It doesn’t matter if the bristles are straight or angled, a straight eyeliner brush will still block your view. The inner corner of the eye takes more effort to get eyelining right. It’s not impossible, just more difficult and time-consuming.

Bent:
An eyeliner brush with a bent, however, lets you see what your are doing – all the way from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. The well-designed angle along with the small but firm tip makes creating your desired line a walk in the park. And because your view is not obstructed by the brush or your own hand, it is much easier and faster to achieve even line thickness on both eyes.
I also like that the brush is thin, like those of liquid eyeliners. In fact, I use the Sonia Kashuk eyeliner brush to dip into my MAC Liquidlast Inky so that I have more control in application. By the way, MAC Liquidlast in Inky was a big mistake. Ugh.
As you can see from the above pictures, the angle liner brush, no matter how you hold it, will block your view. The bent liner brush, on the other hand, allows you a clear view of your eye and the line you’re drawing. This is especially important as you move towards the inner corner of your eye.
How to use the Sonia Kashuk Bent Eyeliner Brush
Before I start my mini series on How to Use Eyeliner on Different Types of Asian Eyes, here’s a little headstart:
Simply load the liner brush with gel liner, look into the mirror and tilt your head back slightly. Place the first stroke on the centre of the lid. I prefer starting from the middle outwards, and then use what’s left on the brush to complete the inner corner of the eye. Flick the brush up at the outer corners if you care for a winged eyeline.
Notice that I keep mentioning ‘easy’, ‘easy’, ‘easy’. Because it really is easy to apply gel eyeliner with this brush.
That little bent really makes a world of difference. I’ve tried using straight brushes with angled bristles and either spend too much time getting it right if not at all.
With a bent eyeliner, I find it easier to create the much loved cat-eye winged liner too. Here I extend the line to just slightly outwards; with this brush you can create the most precise cat-eye line!
Comparing the Old and the New
When I fall in love, I want to keep that love forever. So I got another Sonia Kashuk Bent Eyeliner Brush! To my surprise, they revised it!
The handle of the slightly shorter and fatter new generation eyeliner brush is made of plastic, with a shiny metal tip at the end. The old one is made of wood.
I like that the new one gives a better grip due to a bloatier body. I wish I could tell you something like ‘due to a slightly increased distance between the edge and the bristles, something-something happened’. But no, there really is no difference during application. It still remains awesome in function.
