What Healed My Dry & Chapped Lips: Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner SPF 15

August 30, 2011 by Bun Bun 20 Comments

In the past when it came to dry or chapped lips, I would turn to Vaseline petroleum jelly or lips balms like those from LipIce, The Body Shop and even Kiehl’s.

Vaseline was my savior for protecting my lips from the extreme cold when I was in Korea during Winter one year. When you’re cold and shivering with chapped lips, to heck with oily looking lips and dirty fingers! But in hot and humid climates like Singapore, Vaseline always left me with oily-looking lips and if left overnight, would coagulate into white blobs of slimy stuff on the lips. Not sexy. At all. I don’t like carrying that bulky container around, nor do I like applying lip stuff with my finger.

Not even Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 SPF 4 managed to relieve my cracked lips. And I didn’t like that I had to apply it with my finger too. It smelt nice though.

I prefer those that come in stick form, and can repair, calm and protect my lips from environmental aggressions.

I apply lipstick/lipgloss right after I’m done with my face and eye makeup, and rarely reapply after that. So it is with much delight that I now share with you what I wear on my lips on most days – The Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner SPF 15!

Oh! This wonderful lip conditioner traveled with me everywhere I went during my Taiwan trip! Taiwan’s weather, although cool, was rather dry so I had to have this with me all the time. I applied this almost once every 2 hours!

Don’t Lick Your Lips!

When I used to get chapped lips often, I thought licking my lips will help ‘add moisture’ to them. But the more I licked, the more my lips peeled! Sometimes I would accidentally tear off (OUCH!!!) a small part of the lip and the pain is just excruciating. Funny how a small tear on the lips can send tremendous pain through the rest of the body!

I have learnt through painful experience that licking actually worsens the condition of the lips. When saliva left on the lips evaporates, what’s left is dry and cracked lips. You know, like dried land that has not received rain for years.

Ever since I started using the Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner, my lips feel much more moisturized and have recovered from constant chapping.

Moisturizes Lips with its Creamy Texture

The Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner protects the lips by adding a ton of moisture to them and soothes chapped lips with its cream silk texture.

It goes on velvety and smooth every time I bring it to my lips; it’s like an instant spa treatment! I always apply this onto my lips before any lip color in the day and apply a thin layer before bedtime for an overnight intensive treatment. Then I’ll wake up in the morning to softer and more moisturized lips! MUACK!

Smells Like High Class Lipstick

There is no flavor in this lip balm, which is great for people who don’t like flavored lip products (NYX lipglosses! Cherry! Ugh!) or those who always end up eating their lipglosses! I like that it smells like some high class lipstick, not forgetting that it applies like so too with its luxuriously rich texture!

Base for Lipstick and Lipglosses

It is an ideal base for lipsticks or glosses because it is not too thick to be worn by itself or as an underlying layer. I love that this comes in a stick so application is made faster and more hygienic.

I always end up just re-applying only the Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner because unlike lipglosses or lipsticks, this doesn’t give the feeling of having something on the lips. No matter how many layers you apply, there will not be any sticky or oily feeling.

Breaks Easily?

One thing I don’t like very much is that it breaks easily! Either or I have the strength of Zena The Warrior Princess. This is my second tube of the Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner and the first one also broke. In the picture below the balm actually broke at the base; I just forced the broken part to stick back to what’s left at the base. It’s still usable, though not as perfect anymore. =(

I bought one for my sister and one for my mum. When I twisted it up to check my sister’s lip balm tube, I forgot to twist it back and just put the cap on. RUINED! ARGH! That’s the drawback of twist-up lipsticks.

SPF 15 – Extra Care for the Lips!

Exposure to the sun and other climate aggressions can damage our lips and cause chapping, therefore it is good to have SPF in lip products too.

Providing such smooth comfort, softness and protection to the lips, my lips feel so pampered after putting the Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner on! I bring it with me everywhere, everyday! This is a must-have in my bag and yours too, if you suffer from dry or chapped lips (or just want softer, more kissable lips!).

Juli, have you tried the Burt's Bee's lipbalms?

@chelseaaasj You know what, my friend gave one to me for Christmas but I haven't tried it. I'm currently using the Mentholatum Lipbalm, the one with a nurse logo haha. It's very good! I use it under all my lip stuff and even on its own.

@BunBunMakeupTips  @chelseaaasj I got myself a burt's bees and the finish is amazing. Looks like you just licked your lips, not like an unsexy layer of white balm is caked over them. But unless you're a fan of peppermint.. Don't try the grey one!

@chelseaaasj I have the yellow one. The original, I guess? Wow you make it sound so fantastic! Okie I'll go try hahaha

Thank you! An alternative I use is Dermalogica Lip Treatment. It's less 'oily' (for the lack of a better word) than the Estee Lauder one.

I've been hunting for a new lip balm to use every night, and I might just have to go check this one out! Thanks Bun Bun. :D

Hmm, I might try this one next time. I currently use the Nivea balm, and though I liked the old formula better (despite its lower SPF of 4, as opposed to 10), it's still the only one that seems to work for me ;c. I can't use lip products with coconut oil in them, and some lipsticks (Oh, Forever21, how you fail me) literally peel the skin on my lips off--to the point where even loving the color isn't worth it. I've been around the block with lip balms: I've used Carmex, Chapstick, Burt's Bees, unknown brands with beeswax and royal jelly...and nothing works for me but the Nivea ones. They just flake or are sticky and gross or do nothing or peel my skin :c.

This looks promising. I will give anything to stop my lips from cracking and peeling. It hurts so bad and looks awful. Thanks for the review. I just ordered from your link.

Glad to have helped, Creakywood. Hope you'll like it as much as I do!

thanks for the review! i was actually thinking of getting the Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip protectant but review said it stinks? sigh. and i really love ur blog because there's so many things i recognize here which i thought was exclusive to me and could never be solved and then i find the solution here! i too, get those slimy blobs and it made me hate lipbalm. i too, also got those smudgy crap at the corners of my eyes due to so called waterproof mascaras....but not smudgeproof! so now i have the solutions! yay!

I will put a lipbalm overnight, like an overnight mask. It works wonders! haha, I learned it from Paris B, and when I tried, it was so amazing, I had to blog about it as well. All it takes is 2-3 nights... So if you do it every night, you'll have great lips everyday! Any lipbalm will do. I use Make Up Store one, that's contains plant oils and petrolatum (vaseline). The funny thing is my lipbalm is all gone by morning, and my lips are healed.

Hi. I've been reading through your blog but never commented, great articles and beautiful pictures. If your lipstick keeps on breaking, why not put it in a little travel size jar. You can always use a lip brush like the ones at Sephora if you are icky about germs and sanitary or what not. As of the dry and chapped lips, I've had that problem since I was 11. I've been through so many different "chapsticks" and "lip balms" to try to find one that won't dry out my lips. Unfortunately for me this is not a winter problem, it is a year round problem. Well, it used to be. My lips used to be to dry and cracked that the sides of my lips would bleed (think Joker in Batman movies). It was awful. What works for me is the Bath and Bodyworks C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine. I usually buy it when it goes on the "buy two get one free sale" and stock up on the different types except the tinted one (that one was sticky feeling). Still haven't tried lipstick yet though. :) Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great idea, RoseMarie! How come I never thought of that is beyond me. :P Goodness, Joker...? That bad? That Bath & Bodyworks Lip Shine must be a real life savior! Does it come in other flavors? I don't really fancy anything 'menthol'... And thanks for reading my blog, really appreciate it! =D

Oooo, this looks nice. I never really liked Vaseline I guess its cause of the huge container and the smell but now they have them in balm form which I want to try (the pink one!). but my go to has always been Nivea, the old formula which I ran out of!! The new one is good I guess, now I am using Burts Bees cause my bf said it works wonders for him...I hate the smell! but now i think I can tolerate it. I want to try carmex tho, but I probably wont like it. but I am willing to give it a shot! and maybe the EOS? :D x0x0

Bun Bun

The EOS lip balms look really cute, don't they? Little round egg-shaped jars haha. I might wanna try out the Burts Bees one coz I've heard it does a good job... but just how disgusting is the smell??
